Description
Wirringa means “Women” in a language from Central inland New South Wales, and Baiya means “Speak” in the Darrkinyung, Dharug, Eora, and North-Western NSW language groups. The name reflects one of our core aims: to provide a voice for Aboriginal women.
Founded in response to a long-standing gap in services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, Wirringa Baiya was established to provide culturally safe, gender-specific legal and non-legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who are victim-survivors of violence.
Our work is grounded in three core pillars:
- Legal advice, information, and casework
- Community legal education
- Law reform and policy
As the first and only Aboriginal women’s legal centre managed by Aboriginal women in NSW—and the first of its kind in Australia—Wirringa Baiya continues to grow, guided by our founding values of cultural integrity, self-determination, and community strength.
Our dedicated multidisciplinary team includes both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff working together to advance the legal rights of economically and socially disadvantaged Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and children.
