Description

Victoria Chinese Orchestra (VACO) is a creative community of musicians hailing from a diverse range of backgrounds. This diversity extends to their music, where the orchestra goes beyond the cultural boundaries and explores various forms of music with the goal of introducing new perspectives, reinventing the arts and improving and enriching lives in the society.

Formerly established as an alumni orchestra of Victoria Junior College, VACO branched out to become an independent, non-profit organization with a social responsibility. Open and inclusive, it attracted many through her cause and music. Within the first year of her inception, the orchestra had collaborated with various organisations such as the National Parks Board (NParks), the National Arts Council (NAC), nEbO, Disabled People's Association and Very Special Arts. VACO has also staged events such as An Enchanted Evening with Silver Gems under NAC, a musical featuring three generations of performers under the baton of Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s Resident Conductor Mr Quek Ling Kiong (2015); a joint concert in Taipei with the National Taiwan University of Arts under the the latter's invitation (2015); Ancestral Remembrance Ceremony, a cultural educational show at Marina Bay Sands upon invitation from IMC Organization Ltd and Chung Hua Cultural Education Centre (2016 & 2017); and an outdoor performance collaborating with visually impaired erhu prodigy Stephanie Ow as part of the 1 Disabled People's Association & Very Special Arts Joint Flag Day, to raise funds and inspire empathy for people with disabilities (2017).

The orchestra is currently based in Pasir Ris Elias Community Club, where they continue to curate musical productions and workshops that engage both performers and audiences through their imaginative use of Chinese instruments as a medium for thematic expression and cultural exposition and reflection.
