Premenstrual Disorders Australia is the first official Australian organisation to specifically address Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder "PMDD".
PMDA seeks to improve the quality-of-life of PMDD women and individuals assigned female at birth ('afab)*, by addressing the importance and urgency of building PMDD-specific resources and support for Australian patients, across the mental health, medical and scientific sectors.
More than 650,000 women* across Australia who presently live; have lived or will come to live with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder during their reproductive lifetime. Current statistics estimate that PMDD affects 1 in 20 (5%) - or 60 million women and afab individuals - across the globe.
Women and individuals living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder, are at an increased risk of suicide throughout their reproductive lifetime. Recent studies showed that 70% of PMDD patients are diagnosed with a psychiatric comorbidity (e.g. borderline personality disorder, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder); 74% experience lifetime active suicidal ideation and 34% of PMDD patients, have attempted suicide.
It is not yet known how many patient lives have been lost to PMDD.
Addressing Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder in Australia, is not only of the utmost importance in improving the long-term mental health outcomes for more than half a million Australian women*, it is paramount to suicide prevention itself.
