Description

The Pallaconian Brotherhood was founded as a non-profit organisation on 15th December 1961 by Greek migrants to Australia, whose ancestry hailed from the region of Laconia in the southern Peloponnese.

The Club’s goals were and are:

  • To provide social interaction between Laconians, Greeks and their broader Australian Community
  • Organise a network to assist elderly Greek Australians
  • And to give back to society through philanthropic acts

As the Brotherhood grew, it required a venue from which it could organise events and facilitate the important role it played in the Greek Community of Melbourne, and which better place to establish as their own than a property in the middle of Brunswick which many Laconians had come to call home.

On the 20th August 1990 the Club’s venue was bought, located at 253 Albert St Brunswick. Our venue the ‘Laconian House’ is a two-level building with an Australian Heritage exterior, from which we have hosted dinner dances, cocktail parties, birthday parties, weddings, meetings and seminars.

Located conveniently close to public transport via Sydney Road, with ample car parking available nearby, the Club experienced levels of growth never before seen.

Indeed, the Club reached new heights once more on the 29th of November 2009 when the Club erected a stoic Bust of King Leonidas in the aptly re-named Sparta Place (off Sydney Road). The unveiling of the Bust was attended by the Mayor of Moreland, Deputy-Mayor of Sparta, Governor of Laconia and the late Sarantos Kargakos a world-renown historian of Greece.

Today the Club’s Main, Senior and Youth Committees all work in tandem to serve their members and the local community, by growing the Club and living up to the aims of the Constitution. We invite all Greeks and Philhellenes interested in joining any of these committees to contact us on Facebook or Instagram for the opportunity to socialise, volunteer and give back to our community.
