Description
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), traces its roots back to 1975, when it was originally established as Fakulti Kejuruteraan Jentera (FKJ) at UTM’s Kuala Lumpur campus. Initially comprising two departments, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering, it laid the foundation for Malaysia’s growing industrial and technological landscape. On 15 March 1983, the Department of Petroleum Engineering evolved into a separate entity, forming the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering. FKJ moved to the Skudai campus in June 1989 and was rebranded as Fakulti Kejuruteraan Mekanikal (FKM) in December 1995 to enhance international recognition. In July 2018, under UTM Synergy 4.0, FKM was restructured under the Faculty of Engineering and renamed as the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME).
Today, FME offers accredited four-year undergraduate programmes leading to the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours, with specialized tracks in Manufacturing, Automotive, and Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering. Postgraduate offerings include Master of Engineering (research), PhD, and various coursework-based Master’s degrees in Aeronautics, Marine, Materials, Advanced Manufacturing, and Industrial Engineering.
FME supports cutting-edge research and academic training through advanced facilities like the Automotive Development Centre (ADC), Marine Laboratory, Aeronautics Lab, and Institute of Noise and Vibration. Additional research labs include Systems & Control, Applied Mechanics, Production Engineering, and CAD/CAE. Faculty staff contribute actively to research alliances and high-impact projects. FME’s excellence in teaching and research is nationally recognized, and its alumni have advanced into leadership roles across academia, industry, and government sectors.
