In 1982, 200 women gathered in Sydney to speak publicly on issues affecting women of non-English speaking backgrounds. This led to the establishment of Immigrant Women's SpeakOut Association of NSW in 1985 and its incorporation in 1987.
Our core values are:
Dignity: We uphold every woman's right to dignity, choice and independence. We take a strength-based approach to empower immigrant women to speak, act and make informed decisions.
Respect: We strive for equity for multicultural women by respecting their views and choices; fighting for their rights; and challenging the stereotypes in mass media or other sectors of the community.
Safety: We provide culturally safe and appropriate services to migrant women ensuring that in all aspects of our work, their rights and privacy are upheld.
Social Justice: We aim to break down the barriers that prevent immigrant and refugee women's full participation in Australian society.
SpeakOut has five key programs:
1. Immigrant Women's Resource Centre: We organise a range of activities for women to reduce their isolation, help develop their skills and make them financially independent.
2. Multicultural Women's Support Service: Offers information, guidance, support and referrals to women experiencing domestic violence, who are on the verge of homelessness.
3.Multicultural Women's Shelter: Our shelter provides crisis accommodation to multicultural women (with no children) escaping domestic violence. It provides them security, hope and help to rebuild their self-esteem and regain their confidence.
4.Advocacy: We advocate for the rights of refugee and migrant women, representing their issues and ideas at all levels of government, community, media and the industrial sectors.
5.Pathway to a safe, secure future: Financial independence helps break the cycle of violence and abuse. Our expert recruitment consultant provides women personalised support through the whole recruitment process, helping them to be financially independent.
