hitthebeach.com.au is an Australian online store selling ethically sound, African-inspired funky beach – Kenyan fabrics – Kikoy and Kanga – make fantastic towels and sarongs.
Our baskets are a very traditional East African product, Kikapu is the swahili word for basket and is pronounced ‘key-car-poo’. When lined with the Kanga material they are vibrant, strong, reusable and biodegradable. The raw materials are hand harvested in East Africa from naturally growing plants – completely sustainable. The baskets are hand made in Kenya where we buy them directly from the artisans for a fair price so helping the community.
Our jean bags are made from recycled material bought at local markets. The local community up cycle by selling old clothes and our buying team riffle through the tables to find great quality denim. We then commission the local artisans to turn these into jeans bags complete with Kanga lining.
The business that we commission our sandals from was started in order to embrace the skills of the local people and produce a quality-beaded product that is suitable for export. The company ensures that a high quality, soft leather is used and that the group of women doing the bead work receive a fair income in a sustainable enterprise.
