Sejarah Laboratorium Fenomena Dasar Mesin dimulai ketika mulai dibangunnya gedung Mesin II pada tahun 1986. Dengan nama awal Laboratorium Dasar Khusus Mesin yang sebagian besar alatnya merujuk pada struktur mekanika. Latar belakang didirikannya Lab ini dikarenakan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan mahasiswa dalam pengaplikasian ilmu fisika dasar mengenai struktur mekanika yang sebelumnya dilakukan di laboratorium Fakultas MIPA. Secara operasional Laboratorium Dasar Khusus Mesin dimulai pada tahun 1991 dengan dilaksanakannya praktikum oleh angakatan M’88. Dengan pembimbing praktikum adalah dosen teknik mesin.Pada tahun 1992 dimulai recruitmen asisten pertama sejumlah 6 mahasiswa. Pada tahun 1996, nama labaratorium Dasar Khusus Mesin dirubah menjadi Phenomena Dasar Mesin karena adanya pengembangan alat mengenai mekanika fluida dan perpindahan panas. Pada tahun 2008, nama laboratorium Phenomena Dasar Mesin dirubah menjadi Fenomena Dasar Mesin karena merujuk pada penggunaan ejaan bahasa Indonesia yang benar.
