Diawali dengan adanya studi tour Teknik Mesin Universitas Brawijaya ke Cilacap Yogya dan Solo pada tahun 1977 dengan nama M studi tour Unibraw terjadi suatu kata sepakat dari mahasiswa teknik mesin Unibraw untuk membentuk suatu wadah bagi aktifitas mereka. Selanjutnya wadah itu diberi nama Himpunan Mahasiswa Mesin yang disingkat HMM. Wadah tersebut dibentuk sebagai media untuk menunjukkan kegiatan mahasiswa mesin yang terkenal aktif dan dinamis.Menurut Dwi Mutanto (M’74), pencetus ide pendirian dan ketua umum pertama, sangat sulit merealisasikan gagasan pembentukan wadah tersebut. Hambatan yang paling utama adalah diberlakukannya NKK/BKK di perguruan tinggi sehingga hanya Senat Mahasiswa yang boleh berdiri dan mewarnai kehidupan kampus.

Akan tetapi dengan dilandasi dengan itikad baik dan tekad yang bulat dari seluruh Mahasiswa Mesin akhirnya tercetus ikrar untuk membentuik wadah yang menghimpun seluruh kegiatan Arek-arek Mesin Brawijaya. Ikrar itu diucapkan dan disaksikan bersama oleh + 150 orang peserta M’studi tour Unibraw di Bendungan Sempor, Jawa Tengah.

Setelah cetusan ikrar tersebut, kemudian para pemrakarsa HMM waktu itu, Dwi Mutanto, Heru Mursitoyo, Sudjono, dan Herry segera merintis jalur sosialisasi ke seluruh perguruan tinggi di seluruh Indonesia melalui jalur korespondensi
