Departemen Bimbingan dan Konseling Universitas Negeri Padang berdiri pada tanggal 30 Mei 1964 dan resmi dibuka pada Maret 1967 sesuai SK Menteri Pendidikan Nasional Nomor 5040/UP/II/1964. Departemen BK FIP UNP merupakan salah satu perintis keilmuan Bimbingan dan Konseling di Indonesia. Saat ini Departemen BK FIP UNP memiliki 4 (empat) Program Studi (Prodi) dalam berbagai jenjang, antara lain Program Studi Sarjana Bimbingan dan Konseling (S1), Program Studi Magister Bimbingan dan Konseling (S2), Program Studi Doktor Bimbingan dan Konseling (S3) serta Program Pendidikan Profesi Konselor (PPK). Seluruh Program Studi merupakan bagian integral dari Departemen BK FIP UNP.Sebagai bentuk pengakuan dan jaminan kualitas masukan, pembelajaran, dan lulusan dari Departemen BK FIP UNP, seluruh program studi saat ini telah mendapatkan akreditasi dari Badan Akreditasi Nasional (BAN) Perguruan Tinggi dengan peringkat A pada Prodi Sarjana (S1), peringkat A pada prodi Magister (S2), peringkat B pada Prodi Pendidikan Profesi Konselor dan peringkat B pada Prodi Doktor (S3). Prodi S1 BK telah mendapatkan pengakuan sebagai program studi berstandar Internasional melalui ASEAN UNIVERSITY NETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE (AUNQA) sejak tahun 2021. Dalam upaya menjaga kualitas masukan, proses pembelajaran dan lulusan, Departemen BK FIP UNP selalu meningkatkan kualitas manajemen terutama mengintegrasikan optimalisasi pelayanan dengan pemanfaatan teknologi informasi (TI).
