Description
The purpose of the Council is to protect the health and safety of the public by giving effect to the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (the HPCA Act), and the mechanisms it provides to ensure that Chinese medicine practitioners are competent and fit to practise Chinese medicine.
Some of the Council's functions include:

- setting standards of clinical competence, ethical conduct, and cultural safety and cultural competence for the profession
- authorising the registration of practitioners

- receiving complaints about the conduct, competence or fitness of Chinese medicine practitioners
- promoting education and training within the profession
- notifying employers, ACC, the Director-General of Health and the Health and Disability Commissioner when the practice of a practitioner may pose a risk of harm to the public
- to promote and facilitate inter-disciplinary collaboration and cooperation in the delivery of health services
- to promote public awareness of the functions of the Council.
