Leaveraging Biodiversity and Culture Heritage for Resilient Village Economies.
Sekar Kawung supports local communities to protect their biodiversity and enrich their culture, and to use these as the basis to build multiple value chains, and contributing to resilient village economies.
We are a multi disciplinary gender-inclusive Participatory Action Research (PAR) team of facilitators. We combine ethnobotany, agro-ecology, traditional agroforestry, economics, data science, food technology, are textile production skills, to help communities fully understand their local economic potential, develop business plans and access to finance and markets. Our aim is to help communities capture value in the village.
Traditional Textiles and Sustainable Fashion We are proud of our proven track record in the traditional textile sector, where we have successfully built a connected ecosystems of small village businesses, whose goods and services flow to a value based fashion business with a national scope of consumers. This connected and flowing business ecosystem, allows for farmers and artisans to gradually increase their capacity at their own pace. In harmony with this slow growth, the market also grows, creating a loyal slow-fashion consumer base. Sekar Kawung itself serves as a facilitator and guarantor between the different players throughout the value-chain.
Traditional Agroforestry Systems Another flagship program of Sekar Kawung is our work with forest based villages who still practice complex and biodiverse traditional agroforestry. Our focus is on helping communities to save the biodiversity and strengthen their culture heritage while building resilient value-chains of various forest products made from their traditional food crops.
We have developed an internet based application to help villages create and manage real time databases of their plant biodiversity and related cultural knowledge, to build resilient value chains with.
