UNSW Skylabs, formerly known as UNSW Design Build Fly, specialises in the development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for competitive, research, and humanitarian endeavours. Originating as a Student-Led Project (SLP) in 2018, our team was established to represent UNSW at the annual AIAA Design/Build/Fly competition held in the United States of America. Over time, our scope has broadened, evolving into a society overseeing various student-run projects centered around UAV technology.
Our current initiatives include:
- Skylabs Design Build Fly: Dedicated to constructing an aircraft for participation in the AIAA DBF Competition, scheduled in April each year.
- Skylabs VTOL: Focused on the creation of an autonomous Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) drone capable of delivering medical supplies to remote areas for emergency aid.
- FPV Flight Club: Operating as our first-person view (FPV) drone racing team.
Our membership primarily consists of students enrolled in the prestigious UNSW Faculty of Engineering, recognized as the top-ranking engineering faculty in Australia.
