UNAM was incorporated as a a voluntary, independent, non-political, non-profit, non-governmental organization in 1985.Back then it was known as the United Nations Malaysia Association or UNMA. However this was changed to United Nations Associations Malaysia or UNAM in line with the requirements of the World Federation of United Nations Associations or WFUNA of which we are a member.
UNAM’s principle founders, YM Tengku Ahmad Rithauddeen and Dr.Ian K.M Chia ensured that membership was open to all persons who subscribe to the ideals of the United Nations. UNAM’s members comprises former Malaysian ambassadors, diplomats, academicians, students and individuals
The motto of UNAM- “We are the World” was chosen by the Prime Minister of Malaysia at that time, YAB Dato ’Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad who is also the Patron Of UNAM
