Universitas ini berdiri sejak tanggal 5 September 2003. Pada tanggal 9 April 2021, berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Mendikbud Nomor 128/E/O/2021 yang ditandatangani oleh Dirjen Dikti Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., Ph.D memberikan izin penggabungan STIKes Getsempena Lhoksukon dan STKIP BBG Banda Aceh menjadi Universitas Bina Bangsa Getsempena di Kota Banda Aceh.
