Description
Founded in 2011, The R&D Studio is a creative-driven entertainment studio based in Malaysia.
We create, develop and produce content for different platforms and audiences. Our portfolio includes television series, telemovies, short films, documentaries, music videos and commercials for partners such as Disney, WarnerMedia, Tokyo Broadcasting System, Astro, Primeworks and RTM as well as for corporate clients and agencies.
We currently have a bank of over 100 IPs in various stages of development and production, spanning different formats and genres. 10 IPs have since found new homes with broadcasters and other clients.
A notable achievement for the studio is the production of the live-action television series DISNEY'S WIZARDS OF WARNA WALK (2018) - the first long-form TV series by Disney in Southeast Asia. We worked with Disney producers on ideation, development, scripting, casting, wardrobe and set design, production and post-production of the series. We used two sound stages in Iskandar Malaysia Studios (IMS) in Johor for the multi-cam production.
As storytellers and worldbuilders, we always try to push the boundaries of storytelling and the art form. Our first animated short film, BATIK GIRL (2018) was made for a global audience and explores themes of grief and recovery through an original visual world inspired by the South East Asian textile craft of batik. Another animated short film THE DALANG’S TALE (2021) tackles the theme of domestic violence through visuals inspired by wayang kulit or shadow puppets.
