The Burmese Association of WA (BAWA) is the oldest and largest Myanmar community organisation in Western Australia. It was formed in 1965 and incorporated in 1969 to assist new migrants and refugees who had arrived from Burma.
The association is a 100% volunteer run registered Charity and NFP on ACNC, governed by a constitution and managed by 11 elected executive management committee members who are all volunteers serving our community and over 300 BAWA members.
We aim to create a safe space for the Myanmar Community in WA, providing a nurturing environment for seniors to immerse themselves in language, culture, food, and community, and sharing Burmese culture, traditions, and cuisine with the wider WA community. Our charitable causes (All funds raised are entirely reinvested back into community initiatives) support the much needed areas in the community both in Australia and in Myanmar for education, livelihood, water & food supply, shelter and basic needs. We focus on orphanages, underprivileged schools, struggling youths, young women - widows and single mothers in need, homeless elderlies, seniors in the community, refugees, migrants, vulnerable communities and poverty-stricken farmers in rural parts of South East Asia, Myanmar and Australia.
Our strategy here is to enable and empower these establishments to become self-sufficient, rather than the simple provision of a cash donation which in most cases would result only in a short-term gain. Accordingly, we have provided funds and achieved success in establishing livestock, poultry and agricultural farming projects which remain viable and productive. We have also established sewing skills training through the provision of resources which has resulted in the graduation of qualified seamstresses. Our charitable activities are not limited to Myanmar communities, but inclusive of multicultural CALD communities and other vulnerable communities in Australia.
