TENUN translates to ‘weaving’. It is an initiative to draw together the diverse threads of Sarawak’s culture and heritage into a single fabric, becoming stronger and more beautiful in their combinations. These threads encompass the many elements that keep cultures alive and evolving. The strands of tradition and modernity, of craftsmanship and commerce, of artisan and apprentice are woven together in TENUN to create a singular Sarawak cloth that can see our culture, art, language, music and heritage continue into a new era in a long, unbroken line.
To do this, TENUN has established five pillars of practice. Each of these has a unique focus, whether it is identifying and supporting existing talent; extending or promoting new skills; presenting traditional culture; or even showcasing and marketing innovative or artisanal products and services.
The Happenings are showcases, designed to inspire the imagination.
The Cultural Heritage Centre is an exploration of the traditions and practices that define us.
The Masterclass is a sharing of knowledge and skills, both artistic and commercial.
The Artisan Summit allows the discovery and incubation of new talents.
Bespoke is the marketplace that presents the outcomes of Sarawak’s artisanal communities to the public. It is the interaction between these five pillars, each supporting the others, that will create the artistic growth and cultural experimentation that will propel Sarawak’s artistic communities into the future.
