Description
Taman Tugu is a 66-acre not-for-profit corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, developed with support from public agencies and civil society.
Originally proposed as a commercial theme park, and eyed by other developers for commercial use, Khazanah instead chose to conserve the site as a public green space after engaging with communities and organizations like the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).
In collaboration with the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM), about 1,000 mature indigenous trees such as Jelutong, Tembusu, Pulai, and Gaharu have been tagged for preservation. Over 5,000 additional trees, including endangered and critically endangered species like Keruing and Meranti, have been planted to boost biodiversity and support local fauna.
The park now mirrors rainforest density with up to 200 trees per acre. Trails were created around existing trees, uncovering the site’s past as an illegal dumping ground, with over 300 truckloads of waste removed. Remnants of its history include palm oil trees planted during British rule and traces of old government quarters.
Taman Tugu also preserves cultural heritage with the presence of Madrasah Bustanul Ulum and four Hindu shrines, once serving residents of the area. Purpose-built replacements are being constructed at accessible locations, while the originals will be maintained within the park. Existing institutions like ISIS Malaysia and the PPTD Clubhouse remain on-site.
The land will be permanently held by Amanah Warisan Negara (AWAN), a national trust founded by Khazanah, to manage and protect the space as a public green area. AWAN aims to undertake more initiatives to restore and sustain public and heritage spaces of national value.
