Description

The Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub is a seven year (2021-2027) National Environmental Science Program initiative funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

The Hub is a consortium of research institutions, led by UNSW Sydney and comprising Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Monash University (MU), Curtin University (CU), and the University of Tasmania (UTAS), in collaboration with industry, government agencies across federal, state and local precincts, and community organisations.

The Hub focuses its work across five Impact Priority (IP) areas:

IP1 - Sustainable people-environment interactions IP2 - Reduced impact of plastics and other materials IP3 - Management of hazardous waste and pollutants IP4 - Improved air quality, forecasting and assessment IP5 - Cross hub waste impact initiatives

The Hub is hosted by UNSW and led by Professor Veena Sahajwalla, a materials scientist, engineer, inventor and a founder and Director of UNSW’s Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT).

The Hub coordinates research on reducing the impact of plastic and enhancing sustainable people-environment interactions, developing ways to minimise impacts of hazardous substances and pollutants, and delivering cutting edge technical capabilities, particularly in the fields of waste and materials processing.
