Description
SPAM is an engineering organisation specialising in the technical aspects of shipbuilding from a Propulsion and Manoeuvring systems bias.
The Propulsion system provides the drive capacity for the maritime platform, including the shaftline from prime movers (including generators), clutches to main reduction gear (and thrust bearing), line shaft bearings, seals, couplings, stern tube bearings and the controllable pitch propeller system. The Manoeuvring plant provides the steerage capacity, includes the rudders and steering gear, stabilizing system and any thrusters.
The team interfaces with production and planning to navigate the Technical Data Package (TDP) and vendor furnished information (VFI) from specification through procurement stage, construction and activation.
Specific engineering led activities include supporting production in construction and alignment, then supporting the activation of each of the propulsion and manoeuvring systems, and diesel generator systems, on the maritime platform.
Maintenance of propulsion and manoeuvring plant is critical to the ongoing reliability and efficiency of the platform. With our experience in the design, construction and activation of this plant and experience gained through sustainment of maritime platforms, the team offers considerable expertise in this field.
The depth of knowledge within the SPAM team extends beyond the defence maritime sector into energy conversion - including industrial power generation, combined heat & power and energy recovery, with particular expertise in diesel and gas (reciprocating and turbine) prime movers.
The SPAM team has built a defect investigation and resolution capability leveraging our strengths of design, construction and activation. Within our team are engineers experienced in system investigation, root cause analysis methods, data acquisition systems and other tools serving to provide rapid troubleshooting of any mechanical or electro-mechanical system.
