Description
Catatan sejarah menunjukkan, pendirian sekolah dan penyelenggaraan pendidikan di Surabaya pertama kali dilakukan pada tahun 1818. Beberapa tahun kemudian, pada tahun 1831, didirikan sekolah dasar negeri di mana untuk sekolah inipun, juga hanya terbatas untuk anak-anak orang Belanda. Sedangkan sekolah swasta, sebuah sekolah teknik yang disebut ambacht school, dibuka pada tahun 1853. Usaha-usaha memajukan pendidikan khusus bagi anak-anak pribumi baru berkembang pada permulaan tahun 1900-an, dengan dibukanya MULO, HIS, HBS, dan Sekolah Kedokteran. Perubahan ini terkait dengan beredarnya isu politik etis yang memaksa pihak pemerintah Belanda pada masa itu, untuk juga membuka sekolah-sekolah bagi masyarakat pribumi.
Spendabaya atau SMP Negeri 2 Surabaya berdiri tahun 1930 digunakan sebagai sekolah Belanda (MULO), pada tahun 1940 terjadi perpindahan pemanfaatan sekolah dari Belanda ke Indonesia, kemudian dikukuhkan berdasarkan Surat Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan RI No. 6810 B tertanggal 23-08-1950.
