At Sisters in Islam (SIS), our mission has remained unwavering since our inception in 1987 : to champion the rights of Muslim women in Malaysia and beyond. We are a dedicated non-governmental organisation committed to fostering positive change.
Our journey began with a passionate group of Muslim women who sought to address the injustices experienced under the Islamic family law and Shari’ah court system. Through meticulous study of Quranic interpretations, we discovered an Islam rooted in love, mercy, equality, and justice.
Our evolution has taken us beyond the realm of women's rights. Today, we advocate for democratic principles and human rights, leading an emerging Muslim women's movement focused on bringing reform to Islamic understanding, laws, and policies. Our aim is to promote gender equality, justice, freedom, and dignity within the Islamic context, empowering women to be effective advocates for change.
We envision a progressive society that upholds freedom, gender equality, and social justice for all.
Our work encompasses advocacy, research, outreach & empowerment, and the provision of free legal advisory services through our Telenisa helpline.
