The Royal United Services Institute of South Australia (RUSI-SA) was founded more than 100 years ago and is related to similar bodies in every capital city in Australia. The aim of the RUSI-SA is to promote informed debate and to improve public awareness and understanding of defence and national security.

RUSI-SA is a constituent body of a nation-wide federation of United Services Institutes, with a national office in Canberra. The British parent organisation, the Royal United Services Institute, was founded in 1851 by the Duke of Wellington.

The Institute is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. It is not affiliated with, nor sponsored by the Department of Defence or any other government department. However, because RUSI objectives and activities are relevant to the defence of Australia, the Department of Defence does provide some financial support and facilities.
