The Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) was established in 2002 as a not-for-profit conjoint academic surgical research unit of the Sydney Local Health District and The University of Sydney. Headed by Professor Michael Solomon (Colorectal Surgeon at RPAH and Professor of Surgical Research with the University of Sydney), the primary goal of SOuRCe is to “promote an evidence-based approach to improve clinical practice and to achieve the best possible outcomes for patients”.
Covering all surgical specialties, SOuRCe has established and continues to develop a renowned research profile of surgical outcomes research. Our work includes developing and improving new surgical techniques, enhancing quality of life and patient-reported outcomes, and implementing evidence-based practice.
We are proud partners of the Royal Prince Alfred Institute of Academic Surgery (IAS). Established in 2014 by SLHD in partnership with the University, the IAS aims to promote academic surgery and endorse best surgical practice and patient care through research, education and academic career development for surgeons.
Some of the SOuRCe achievements include:
- Master of Surgery Program: Commenced in 2004 through SOuRCe and continued in 2012 through the University of Sydney with approximately 200-300 surgeons each year.
- Notaras scholarship: Following a generous donation by Dr Mitchell J Notaras in 2003, this scholarship has allowed SOuRCe to provide clinical training and higher degree supervision for 10 surgeons.
- National and international collaborations: Including innovative surgical clinical trials methodology (>70 RCTs) and involvement of over 1000 collaborators.
- Pioneering measures of patient choice: Including patient preference studies, equipoise, decision aids and surgical quality of life measures, featured in over 100 publications.
- Research impact: Amounting to >$24M in competitive funding, >700 publications, 22 books, supervision of >85 higher degree and >50 MD students.
