About Relung Indonesia Foundation
The Resiliensi Lingkungan Indonesia Foundation, known as Relung Indonesia, was established in Jakarta in 2018 by Notarial Deed No. 27 dated August 27, 2018 (Notary Kokoh Henry, SH., MKn), and officially legalized by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights through Decree No. AHU-0011620.AH.01.04. In 2023, new leadership for the 2023–2028 period was formalized by Notarial Deed No. 04 dated September 19, 2023 (Notary Athanasia Dian Santi) and Decree No. AHU-0022281.AH.01.12.
Relung is a metamorphosis of the Institute for Education and Community Empowerment Studies (IECES), a grassroots movement founded in Yogyakarta in 2000 by Forestry students of Gadjah Mada University. From its roots, Relung has grown into a national foundation committed to environmental sustainability, inclusive natural resource governance, and regenerative rural economies.
Relung’s approach is grounded in Regenerative-Resilience, combining ecological restoration, adaptive learning, and community empowerment. This includes reforestation and mangrove rehabilitation along the southern coasts of Yogyakarta and Central Java, sustainable agroforestry in the Menoreh Hills, and strengthening local food systems and livelihoods through inclusive innovation.
Relung also addresses environmental, economic, and social vulnerabilities in rural communities—ranging from biodiversity loss and climate change to gender inequality and limited access to education, land, and fair markets.
Through partnerships with local communities, government, private sector, and civil society, Relung promotes Green Knowledge—an integrated framework of traditional wisdom, scientific insight, and participatory learning to foster sustainability.
With over two decades of grassroots experience, Relung envisions a dynamic harmony between humans and nature, and strives to be a leading actor in building a regenerative, just, and resilient Indonesia.
