Didirikan tahun 1990, pada awalnya Perusahaan ini bernama PT Summit Sinar Mas Finance, hasil kerjasama usaha antara PT Sinar Mas Multiartha dan Sumitomo Corporation, Jepang. Awalnya PT Summit Sinar Mas Finance memfokuskan aktivitas usaha pada sewa guna usaha. Namun di tahun 2003 PT Summit Sinar Mas Finance mengubah aktivitas usahanya menjadi perusahaan pembiayaan kendaraan bermotor, sekaligus mengganti namanya menjadi PT Summit Oto Finance.
Pada Maret 2016 pemegang saham Perseroan menjadi PT Summit Auto Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, dan PT Sinar Mas Multi Artha Tbk. Para pemegang saham utama memberikan dukungan dan mengendalikan semua aspek usaha dari manajemen, treasury, keuangan hingga operasi. Dengan dukungan dari seluruh pemegang saham, PT Summit Oto Finance telah berhasil tumbuh dan meningkatkan pembiayaan sepeda motor serta memiliki jaringan kantor yang luas di Indonesia.
Usaha utama PT Summit Oto Finance adalah pada pembiayaan kepemilikan motor baru dan motor bekas.
