Description
Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria is an equine welfare organisation based in Victoria. The purposes are:
1. To assist horse owners through education, advice and support to rehabilitate their own horses;
2. To rescue and rehabilitate any horse found abandoned, sick, injured, mistreated or neglected or likely to become so in the imminent future;
3. To provide emergency care, treatment and assistance to horses;
4. To educate the community on the plight of neglected horses; and 5. To contribute to the development of improved government legislation and policy relating to the welfare of horses.
We receive reports of horse neglect from the public via our 1300 phone number, email or Facebook which we then investigate. If we find a horse or horses that are not being cared for adequately, our first step is to offer education and assistance. We then follow up to ensure that the owner has taken steps to rectify the situation and is demonstrating responsible horse ownership.
If the owner is unwilling or unable to improve the welfare of the horse, the horse may be surrendered to Project Hope. Our members then assist with rehabilitation. The horse’s needs are assessed and appropriate treatment given. Once the horse is in good physical and psychological health, we look to find a long-term home.
Project Hope currently has 400 members and 190 horses in care.
