Posisi strategis ini semakin terasa sejak tahun 2005. Di tahun itu, minyak kelapa sawit telah menjadi minyak nabati dengan produksi terbesar (24%), menggeser minyak kedelai (23%) yang sebelumnya menjadi raja minyak nabati dunia.
