Description
Pillion offers paralegal and admin support services. Created in 2016, by the co-founders of national insurance law firm HBA Legal, on the basis that “legal services” encompasses many different tasks, not just legal work done by lawyers.
Where appropriate, HBA Legal utilises Pillion people for suitable admin and paralegal tasks, allowing HBA’s lawyers to focus on what they do best. The model ensures ‘right resource, for the right task’ which therefore allows HBA Legal to offer clients innovative and very competitive fee structures compared with traditional law firms.
Pillion is a hub of future legal talent. Pillion paralegals are typically law students at the University of Newcastle who gain real world experience while they study. Many Pillion paralegals have gone on to have legal careers with HBA Legal, either staying in Newcastle or venturing off to one of Australia’s capital cities.
In late 2020, both HBA Legal and Pillion were acquired by Crawford & Company, the world’s largest publicly listed claims management businesses with operations in 70 countries. Crawford has been trusted by brokers, insurers and corporations for more than 80 years.
Since becoming part of Crawford, Pillion has evolved to also support Crawford in the triage of insurance claims (when insurers receive claims from policyholders, they will often hand over to a claims management company, such as Crawford, to handle the claim on their behalf and work with policyholders to arrange necessary repairs). The Pillion triage team is utilised by Crawford depending on claims volumes at any given time. Roles in this team provide invaluable experience as a basis for future study in law, accounting, engineering and other professions.
