Description
MQ Health Interventional Pulmonology is a Flagship Service of MQ Health at Macquarie University Hospital. It is a leading centre in Australia for Interventional Pulmonology (IP) Training, and is the only centre outside the USA that is a designated AABIP/AIPPD (American Association for Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology and Association of Interventional Pulmonology Program Directors) training site.
MQ Health Interventional Pulmonology is also a preeminent quarternary referral centre for all IP procedures. This includes the management and research into bronchoscopic techniques for lung volume reduction in COPD. We utilise various ELVR techniques such as endobronchial valves, thermal liquid ablation, airway bypass devices and the use of polymer sealant. We are also a major referral centre for management of central airways obstruction, lung cancer diagnosis and treatment, refractory asthma, bronchiectasis and interstitial lung disease. With the imminent onset of lung cancer screening, we have developed a comprehensive lung nodule program with the advanced diagnosis and management of peripheral nodules as a centrepiece. This includes the use of ultrathin bronchoscopes, robotic bronchoscopy systems and the integration of cone beam CT guidance.
We are one of the few IP centres in Australia with a dedicated pleural service.
From a research perspective are a leading centre for first in human IP trials, including Bronchial Rheoplasty for Chronic Bronchitis, Biopolymer Sealant in reversing collateral ventilation in severe COPD patients prior to endoscopic lung volume reduction, Endosopic Thermal Liquid Ablation in COPD, Airway Bypass Devices in COPD, Targeted Lung Denervation utilising cryotherapy and First in Human use of the Galaxy Robotic Bronchoscopy system.
We have the only 2 year IP fellowship program with a dedicated research stream leading to a Masters Degree in IP (Research) (MRes).
