Description
Our roots go back to 1974, at Cantina Los Tres Hombres in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Our founder John Buell, fresh out of business school, got a job as the host in this newly opened Mexican restaurant. After a few years at the Cantina and a failed attempt at opening a similar restaurant in New York City, John moved to Bend, Oregon and opened the first Mexicali Rose restaurant with his partners.
Fast forward to 1999, the family sold up and moved to NZ, bringing with them the laid-back California flavours of Mexicali Fresh. By 2005, the family opened the first Mexicali Fresh restaurant in Princes Wharf Auckland. The Mexicali brand has now grown to 14 outlets around the country.
In 2015 Mariposa Restaurant Holdings acquired the Burger Wisconsin franchise and expanded it to 25 stores. From 2016 onwards, the innovative food concepts Taco Joint (a micro offer powered by Mexicali), Ha! Poke and Hot Lips were introduced to our brand portfolio.
