Mahi for Ukraine is a national volunteer-led movement in Aotearoa New Zealand dedicated to supporting Ukraine as it defends itself against russia’s ongoing war — a war that began with the illegal seizure of Crimea and the invasion of Donbas in 2014, and escalated into a full-scale assault in February 2022.
The impact on Ukraine has been devastating: mass displacement, thousands of lives lost, civilians targeted, cities destroyed, and a continued campaign to erase Ukrainian identity. New Zealand may be far from the frontline, but the stakes are global — security, international law, and the future of democratic nations.
“Mahi” is a Māori word meaning work, effort, contribution, and purpose. Since the first days of the full-scale invasion, that’s exactly what we have been doing: showing up, organising, advocating, fundraising, informing, and standing with Ukraine.
What began as a small group of volunteers with demanding day jobs has grown into a nationwide effort. Today, Mahi for Ukraine works closely with the New Zealand Government, NGOs, Ukrainian community organisations, media, businesses, and everyday New Zealanders committed to supporting Ukraine’s right to freedom and sovereignty.
