Description
The Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) is an initiative that aims to ensure that timber and wood products can be verified in order to guarantee legal and sustainable sources. SVLK is central to the partnership agreement between Indonesia and the European Union because it can be used as a Timber Legality Assurance System (TLAS).
Under this system, all products covered by the agreement must have a legal license in order to enter the EU market. In responding to these challenges and needs, and the importance of guarding and ensuring the implementation of the SVLK, on September 23, 2010 a network of Independent Forestry Monitoring (JPIK) was agreed and signed by 29 civil society organizations from scattered from Aceh to Papua in a FLEGT workshop meeting, September 21-23, 2010, in Jakarta.
At the 2015 JPIK National Meeting, network members agreed to expand JPIK work issues (beyond SVLK). Since then, JPIK has begun to carry out activities on the issue of broader forest governance by monitoring the problems that cause deforestation (drivers of deforestation).
The formation of JPIK is a manifestation of commitment to contribute actively in promoting good forestry governance by ensuring credibility and accountability from the implementation of a system of Sustainable Production Forest Management (PK-PHPL) Performance Evaluation and Timber Legality Verification (VLK).
