Description

IWC is Aboriginal community-controlled, non-government and charitable, offering services to all people – Indigenous and non-Indigenous – across Bundaberg and the Wide Bay / Burnett. From very small beginnings, today IWC is a major employer in Bundaberg region, with 140 staff and growing.

IWC has more than 12,000 clients, and growing, and provides around 92,000 Episodes of Care a year. IWC services include GPs, access to Specialists, Allied Health Professionals (Dietitian, Diabetes Educators, Midwife), Registered Nurses, Indigenous Health Practitioners and a full IWC Dental Practice. As part of its unique whole-of-person model of care IWC works to build capacity in individuals, families and the community. Our Medical and Health services are supported by Family and Community Services including psychologists, counsellors, a social worker, an Alcohol & Other Drugs (AOD) program, Youth Program, and Families Wellbeing (early learning development) program. IWC delivers the Indigenous Sport & Recreation program in Central Queensland.

IWC is the Local Area Coordinator for the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Bundaberg region.

IWC holds multiple accreditations, and in 2016 was named the national Aboriginal Medical Service of the Year by AGPAL (Australian General Practice Accreditation Ltd). It was the first Aboriginal community-controlled organisation in Queensland to achieve ISO accreditation for Quality Management, and in 2017 was featured on the cover of the Prime Minister's Closing the Gap report.

IWC works to a robust private / community business model that has sustainability built into its operations. In 2017, IWC won $7.4 million Australian Government funding towards a $19.8 million project to build Stage 2 of its successful IWC Health & Wellbeing Complex in Bundaberg. Stage 1 opened in 2014, and in 2015 was the winner of the Best Commercial Building over $5 million in the Queensland Building Design Awards. This showcase facility also was the winner in the regional round of the Community Services Facilities Category of the Queensland Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards 2015.
