This program seeks to lift the profile of some of the incredible young women scientists in Tasmania, amplify their voice so they can inspire the current and next generation of women in STEMM and support them to remove the barriers to an education in STEMM for youth in their community.
Women are often under-represented in STEMM careers and people from remote, low-income areas, indigenous or minority communities often face additional barriers to achieving employment in STEMM fields. However, a higher degree in STEMM can also be a springboard towards a rewarding career and an opportunity to give back to one’s community.
Many women overcome substantial barriers to undertake and complete their degree. These inspiring women are uniquely placed to identify and remove STEMM education barriers for others and serve as role models for the next generation of diverse scientists in their home country or community. However, women studying their PhD rarely have the opportunity to tell their story and present about their work for their community.
With small grants, this program supports fellows to create an impactful STEMM education engagement program for their community. While implementing their program, Fellows will present about their research and engagement for the public, via a recorded YouTube video and via a podcast. Fellows will also engage with at least one Tasmanian school and will receive coaching on how to hone their research story prior to presenting. Other opportunities for STEMM engagement and networking will be offered to Fellows throughout the year.
