Sejarah awal IAIN Palangka Raya dimulai dari sebuah lembaga bernama Fakultas Tarbiyah Al-Jami’ah Palangka Raya yang diresmikan Rektor IAIN Antasari Banjarmasin, H. Mastur Jahri, MA pada tahun 1972. Fakultas ini didirikan sebagai upaya memenuhi kebutuhan tenaga guru Agama Islam di Kalimantan Tengah. Pada tanggal 13 Nopember 1975 Fakultas ini memperoleh status terdaftar berdasarkan surat keputusan Dirjen Binbaga Islam Depag RI Nomor: Kep/D.V218/1975
