Holmes List Barristers has proudly served the Victorian Bar since its founding in October 1992, when Head Clerk Paul Holmes recognised a gap in the market for a progressive, responsive List that catered to the needs of emerging barristers. What began as a bold new venture with just 30 members at 555 Lonsdale Street—the only List at the time located outside of William Street—has since grown into one of the most respected and dynamic barristers’ Lists in Australia.
Now home to approximately 185 barristers, Holmes List Barristers is widely acknowledged as a leading authority in criminal, administrative, and family law. Our success has been built on a foundation of integrity, personal service, and innovation, with a strong emphasis on supporting both barristers and the legal profession as a whole.
As of July 2025, the List is led by Paul Rees and Matt Rees, two dedicated professionals with deep, longstanding ties to the List. Their leadership marks a new chapter—one committed to honouring our legacy while embracing the future. With a clear vision and a passion for excellence, they continue to drive Holmes List forward as a trusted, independent force in the legal landscape.
