Hanworth House is an Award-Winning Heritage Listed Home offering Accommodation and Venue Space for Special Events. Our Mission is to raise $100,000 per year to benefit local charities whilst connecting like-minded women and men in the spirit of the Heart of Hanworth. With a rich history of bringing together entrepreneurial minds and supporting causes that span from women and children to cancer research, Hanworth is a Brisbane Icon that gives back to its community through its philanthropic endeavours.
One of the oldest homes ever built in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, the original owner was Captain George Poynter Heath, the first Portmaster of Brisbane who was responsible for charting parts of the Great Barrier Reef and established many of the lighthouses across the Queensland Coast. Captain Heath, his wife and nine children originated from Hanworth, Norfolk, England hence the namesake. The first brick was laid in 1864 and this majestic home has hosted numerous high society parties. Mary Wienholt purchased the home in 1912 in dedication of her mother Ann Powell who passed away and for the next 80+ years repurposed Hanworth as a Hospice for the Aged for impecunious gentlewomen. Hanworth was gifted to the Theosophical Society and then the Anglican Church.
Almost 100 years after Mary Wienholt, in similar fashion, Marisa Vecchio and her family purchased Hanworth in honour of Marisa's mother, Romana Preston. The home was found in a dilapidated state and after renovations were complete, mere weeks from opening as accommodation to the public, the house was tragically set on fire by an arsonist. Sadly, 80% of the home was damaged and extensive restoration took place once more. Hanworth is now lovingly restored and like a phoenix rising from the ashes, she shines brighter than ever. Some of you may have seen the Happy Tree light up the path for the commuters along Lytton Rd at nightfall. We hope to welcome you to Hanworth House soon!
