Description
The Wellness Advocacy and Leadership Initiative (WALi) is a program of Griffith University’s Student Associations - the Student Representative Council (SRC) and Postgraduate Students Association (GUPSA). Established in 2018 in response to students’ calls for more mental health and wellbeing support, WALi exists to create a campus culture that encourages conversation, connection, and help-seeking. WALi harnesses the power of peer-to-peer support through our team of WALi Student Leaders and aims to:
- normalise help-seeking and reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues,
- provide appropriate first-response and early intervention,
- improve access to services and resources through informed referrals, and
- increase students’ sense of connection and belonging.
For our students employed as WALi Student Leaders, this program offers a range of opportunities for development of transversal skills such as communication, resilience, cultural literacy, problem solving, relationship building, leadership, project management, teamwork, evaluation, and critical thinking. We have been fortunate to have many students work for WALi since 2018, it is their dedication to their peer's wellbeing that sees WALi continue to grow to meet the evolving needs of Griffith students.
WALi is primarily delivered through regular Wellness HQ stalls hosted on Griffith’s Logan, Mount Gravatt, Nathan and Southbank campuses, and our Mental Health and Wellbeing Week suite of activities held annually in September. With the growth of the program and other related Student Associations services and initiatives in 2023, WALi now acts as an umbrella for the many advocacy, welfare, and wellbeing initiatives offered by the SRC and GUPSA.
