Giant Steps Tasmania is a not for profit, independent, specialist school and therapy centre for children with a diagnosis of Autism. It is the only specialised school for students with autism in Tasmania.
Giant Steps Tasmania was established in 1995 by a group of dedicated parents and community members who were committed to ensuring focused and specialised education to suit the needs of students with autism.
15 students were enrolled in the very first intake in 1995. Currently we have 53 students enrolled, with the majority of students enrolled full time, but also with a few students dual enrolled who participate in the Giant Steps program 2/3 days a week and who also engage with their local school.
Giant Steps is located in the rural community of Deloraine. The town is a leisurely drive of approximately 35 minutes from the cities of Launceston and Devonport. We currently own and operate three buses which are used to transport students to Giant Steps from Launceston and Devonport daily.
Currently we have students enrolled from Prep to Grade 12, and are organised into four class groups. We have 6 teachers, a full-time occupational therapist and a team of approximately 30 teacher assistants on staff to support our students.
Our program is individualised and tailored to the individual needs of each student. We seek to develop student’s social awareness and connections, self-awareness, personal independence, communication skills and academic knowledge, understanding and skills.
Using current assessment evidence and knowledge of the student a comprehensive Individual Education Plan is developed for each student in collaboration with all key stakeholders. The plan outlines individualised adjustments and goals for the student. Intensive support is provided to ensure students are progressing towards their individual goals and are continually building upon their success.
At Giant Steps we create an environment where students can be themselves and thrive.
