Universitas Andalas memiliki Unit Kegiatan Pers Mahasiswa (UKPM) yang bernama Genta Andalas. Resmi berdiri tanggal 16 Oktober 1986, Genta Andalas memiliki slogan Media Peduli Bangsa, Damai, dan Bermoral. Genta Andalas mengelola penerbitan tabloid kampus yang biasa disebut Tabloid Genta Andalas yang terbit satu kali dalam dua bulan. Selain tabloid, Genta Andalas juga rutin menyajikan informasi seputar kampus melalui Portal Berita Gentaandalas.com. UKPM ini sempat memiliki stasiun radio dari 2001 - 2003 dengan nama Radio Jingga. Genta Andalas juga memiliki agenda rutin seperti Pekan Jurnalistik, Pelatihan Jurnalistik Tingkat Dasar yang diadakan setiap tahun, hingga Pelatihan Jurnalistik Tingkat Lanjut.
Pada tahun 2005, Genta Andalas berhasil melakukan penerbitan untuk event tingkat nasional yaitu Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (PIMNAS) dimana Universitas Andalas sebagai tuan rumahnya. Tahun 2007, Genta Andalas merupakan satu-satunya media mahasiswa yang pernah menjadi Official Media Partner wilayah Sumatera untuk BBC World Service Siaran Indonesia pada tahun 2007-2009.. Tahun 2013 Genta Andalas dipercaya menjadi media partner Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an Mahasiswa Nasional (MTQ-MN) XIII.
