The Epilepsy Society of Australia (ESA) is the national professional organisation for clinicians, scientists, and technologists dedicated to improving the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of epilepsy.
Our mission is to advance the medical care of people living with epilepsy in Australia by fostering collaboration, promoting research, and sharing knowledge across disciplines. ESA provides a platform for clinicians, researchers, and allied professionals to exchange ideas, develop expertise, and drive innovation in epilepsy care and science.
Founded from the Austin Hospital Epilepsy Workshops that began in 1983, ESA became the Australian chapter of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) in 1989. Since then, the Society has promoted and advocated for improved medical management of epilepsy across Australia, supporting scientific research and education through grants and collaborative initiatives.
Through our annual scientific meeting, educational programs, and partnerships with national and international organisations, ESA facilitates professional development and advances evidence-based care. We promote scientific discovery, mentor the next generation, and advocate for high-quality, accessible care for all people affected by epilepsy.
ESA’s membership includes neurologists, epileptologists, scientists, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, and allied health professionals — all working towards a common goal: to improve the lives of those affected by epilepsy.
By connecting Australia’s epilepsy community with global expertise, ESA strengthens the bridge between clinical practice, research, and education. Together, we aim to enhance patient outcomes, advance scientific understanding, and inspire leadership in epilepsy care.
