Whānau Strength: The Heart of Eating Disorder Recovery in New Zealand Aotearoa
In Aotearoa, strong, informed carers and whānau support is crucial for those navigating the challenges of eating disorders. Parents, family, and friends – the whānau – play a vital role in recovery, but often lack the necessary knowledge, tools, and support to effectively contribute to the healing journey.
Without proper backing, eating disorders can deeply impact the entire whānau, including parents, caregivers, and siblings, potentially leading to enduring mental health challenges. This ripple effect highlights the need for dedicated support systems within our communities.
Recognising this gap, Eating Disorders Carers Support (EDCS) emerged from the lived experiences of three parents facing the realities of eating disorders within their own whānau. Founded as a grassroots group in 2018, it transitioned to a charitable trust in late 2022, solidifying its commitment to supporting whānau across the motu (nation).
EDCS is a national organisation dedicated solely to empowering parents, caregivers, and siblings of those living with eating disorders. Its core mission is to provide support, education, and resources, guiding whānau through the often complex and challenging path to recovery.
By equipping whānau with the skills and knowledge to manage treatment at home, EDCS aims to reduce the need for hospitalisation and safeguard the mental wellbeing of the entire support system. This approach acknowledges the strength of whānau as a central pillar in the recovery process, aligning with the values of whanaungatanga (kinship, relationships) and manaakitanga (hospitality, care) that are so important within New Zealand.
