Description
It was founded by Syekh Abbas Abdullah in 1920 as a modern school system concept in Indonesia under the name Sumatera Thawalib. Changed his name to Darulfunun by Syekh Abbas Abdullah in 1931. Legally registered in 1957 as Waqf Asset. Education activities were already established in 1854 by Syaikh Abdullah Dt Jabok, son of Tuanku Nan Banyak Dt Perpatih, one of the judges of the Bonjol Region. Syaikh Abbas Abdullah (pioneer of Indonesian Islamic Education in Indonesia, who introduces math, world history, and politics in curriculums).
On that day, The Darul Funun madrasah pioneered applying the class system in Sumatera, following Taman Siswa and Muallimin Muhammadiyah in Java Island. Darul Funun students then spread this success system to establish the new concept of Madrasah in Indonesia.
In 2018, Darulfunun made a huge improvement led by Tan Abdullah A. Afifi. The institutions started hybrid operations in Payakumbuh - Indonesia, and Putrajaya - Malaysia.
