Description

The China Cultural Centre in New Zealand is a cultural institution in New Zealand managed by the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. On October 19, 2015 in the capital city Wellington, it was registered as a non-profit organization (NGO), and on December 11 was officially announced to the public. As the 24th Cultural Centre established globally by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, it is intended to strengthen China-New Zealand cultural exchanges and cooperation, and support mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

The Centre is located in the Wellington CBD and is close to the Te Papa National Museum, the Wellington City Art Gallery, the Central Library, the St James Opera House, Paramount Cinema, and the Maritime Museum, placing it in a thriving multicultural space. Occupying 669 square metres of land, and with a total of around 1500 square metres of space across three floors. The centre will boast a library of bilingual books which keeps up to date with Chinese mainland publishing, allowing the public to enjoy a comprehensive collection on Chinese history, culture, development and contemporary living. In addition, the Centre will have an exhibition room, a dance classroom, martial arts classrooms, a Chinese opera theatre and more. The completed set of facilities aims to share China’s history, culture, and modern lifestyle.

By the time that the Centre is fully normalized, there will be regular performances, exhibitions, art festivals, quiz competitions, and other fun cultural activities. The centre will also organize many different kinds of ongoing short-term training courses in subjects such as language, culture, arts and health and fitness. There will also be forums and debates for academics across different fields, providing a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas.

Sharing the Chinese voice and speaking the Chinese story, the China Cultural Centre in New Zealand’s mission is to promote the exchange of arts and culture and aims to become a window through which New Zealanders can learn about the past, present and future of China. The Centre aims to share the knowledge and culture of a five-thousand-year-old civilization, ancient and rich in heritage, and the vitality of a country which is currently the second largest economy in the world. The Centre is an important channel through which New Zealanders can understand Chinese culture today, as well as the brilliance of an ancient civilization.
