The Centre for Disability Employment Research and Practice (CDERP) is Australia’s independent centre of excellence advancing inclusive employment for people with disability. We bridge the gap between research and practice through applied research, workforce development, and service innovation.
Since the early 2010s, CDERP has worked across policy, practice, and systems reform to champion Customised Employment, Discovery, and sustainable open employment models. Our research and partnerships with government, service providers, academics, and international leaders shape evidence-informed approaches that increase economic participation and genuine choice for people with disability.
Our work spans four key areas:
Applied Research & Policy – conducted through CDER Research, chaired by Emeritus Professor Trevor Parmenter AM, generating knowledge that informs disability employment reform nationally and globally.
Professional Development – through CDERP College, we deliver the only ACRE-accredited Customised Employment certification program outside the United States, contextualised for Australia’s NDIS, DES, ADE evolution, and other employment systems.
Practice Support for Service Providers – partnering with providers to strengthen quality, embed evidence-based models, and adopt tools such as CEQAF, CEOFECT, and the Discovery Experience Reflection Scale (DERS) to improve outcomes.
Direct Service Innovation – via Work First, we apply evidence-based approaches in real-world settings, supporting people with disability to explore careers, build skills, and secure meaningful employment through Discovery, job carving, and other customised strategies.
Led by Dr Peter Smith, a recognised authority in disability employment, CDERP continues to influence the future of inclusive employment systems by connecting theory, practice, and lived experience.
