Description
Bumi Setara (Equal Earth in English) is a community organization, was founded in Indonesia in 2016 to advocate for diverse range of persons with disabilities, focusing on children, youth, women and innovation as its foundation. Persons with disabilities is constitute 15% of the world’s population, and yet, in the Global South, the fulfillment of disability rights that intersecting with technology is underfunded and faces wide gap with Global North. Over the past four years, Bumi Setara work together with coalition of organization of persons with disabilities in Bali (Bali OPDs Task Force for Adaptive Aids) to ensure the provision of assistive technology and adaptive aids. While we claimed to live in the digital age, numerous persons with disabilities are alienated and cannot meaningfully participate in their society. Technology and digital spaces are never neutral, what we are doing is reclaieclaiming them and removing the ableism within.
Since 2021, Bumi Setara has joined the Southeast Asian Feminist Action Movement (SEAFAM), a coalition of emerging feminist movement in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines coordinated by Jakarta Feminist. In 2019, Bumi Setara developed IncluSRHR Project, a video series of Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights in sign language. From 2016 until 2022, Bumi Setara ran a scholarship program for formal education institution dedicated for student with disabilities in Bali, with 12 scholarship recipients. Main goal of Bumi Setara is bringing the youth with disabilities voice on the table with the intersectional feminist lens.
