Description
Radiologists are focused on diagnosis, thus their brain imaging reports often lack detailed information about the specific anatomical structures affected by the brain lesion/s. Yet, this information is vital for rehabilitation clinicians who need it to determine the:
- Exact extend of the lesion,
- Functions that are likely to be affected, and
- Potential for recovery.
Therefore, in addition to reading the radiology report, rehabilitation clinicians also need to carefully inspect the brain images. To inspect brain images, rehabilitation clinicians need to:
1) identify anatomical structures on 2D brain images 2) interpret the various types of brain images and the information they provide about the pathology 3) keep up with new imaging techniques used in the scanners 4) understand current neuroscience literature about the organisation of the brain and its multiple functions.
I'm passionate about teaching these skills to rehabilitation clinicians online or in physical locations. Clinicians who completed my courses report that they are able to:
- Conduct early in-depth assessments of the specific affected functions
- Actively choose the best treatment approaches instead of relying on trial and error
- Discuss early and individual prognoses with their clients, and thus give them hope and direction at a time of distress.
- Conduct open and transparent conversations with clients / patients / families and integrating brain imaging where possible.
