Rānui – A Home Away from Home for Families in Need For over 33 years, Rānui, owned and managed by the Bone Marrow Cancer Trust, has provided a home away from home for patients and their whānau travelling to Christchurch for life-saving medical treatment.
Located opposite Christchurch Hospital and beautiful Hagley Park, Rānui House offers 26 warm, welcoming apartments where families can stay close during treatment. In November 2024, we proudly opened Rānui Apartments, adding 54 new apartments to meet the growing demand and ensure no family is turned away.
Patients come from across New Zealand - from Whangārei to Stewart Island for treatments including chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, heart surgery, high-risk pregnancies, neonatal care, kidney transplants, dialysis and other serious illnesses. These services are often not available in regional or rural communities, meaning families leave behind loved ones, workplaces, and communities for weeks or months.
At Rānui, families have their own apartment with comfortable beds, kitchens, laundry, and living space, along with generous communal areas and onsite parking. Our dedicated team takes care of the practical things so families can focus on what matters most: treatment, recovery and being together.
We welcome everyone, regardless of age, background, or treatment type, because we know that when families are together, they heal faster.
Our mission: To provide comfort, care, and support to patients and their whānau during some of life’s most challenging times.
Support from donors, volunteers and partners makes Rānui possible. Every contribution helps us keep families together and provides the reassurance, space, and practical support they need to face treatment with confidence.
The Bone Marrow Cancer Research Trust funds world-class cancer research through its annual grants programme - to date we have made grants of over $1.4m to support this vital research.
